This inspiration for this quilt was Fabric Mutt, Heidi's <a href="http://fabricmutt.blogspot.com/2016/01/big-bear-cabin-quilt.html" target="_blank">Big Bear Cabin quilt </a>. I drafted a smaller block and set them on point with some background sashing and cornerstones. It was a great quilt to use up some scraps and fit my planned scrappiness style. I quilted it simply with vertical straight lines.<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwAltt2mU08Fz8wrym8c-XKs9cqzjIo78JMcWeU5Hfc9ba-ss89SHfibUhS2d53rREA5CJFaw_rdfOIMfXnm81M8w-hmjlkcqJBG53u9FiQiXsW30GyqR6lLxYybi7y6_yebmFyuY0430/s4581/DSC_5056.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4581" data-original-width="3194" height="625" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwAltt2mU08Fz8wrym8c-XKs9cqzjIo78JMcWeU5Hfc9ba-ss89SHfibUhS2d53rREA5CJFaw_rdfOIMfXnm81M8w-hmjlkcqJBG53u9FiQiXsW30GyqR6lLxYybi7y6_yebmFyuY0430/w436-h625/DSC_5056.jpeg" width="436" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In other news, I've joined the <a href="https://alisonglass.com/shop-woo/stitch-club-2020/" target="_blank">Alison Glass Stitch Club</a>. It's a 6 month program where a new hand stitching technique and project is featured each month. It came at just the right time for me. I'm enjoying the slow hand work and learning new to me techniques.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The first month (June) was Kantha stitching. I've decided to continue using Instagram to share my quilting process and projects and stop blogging. I have enjoyed this space tremendously.</div><div><br /></div><div>I hope you'll follow me on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/clammon/" target="_blank">Instagram</a> - @clammon. She has a wonderful, modern, clean aesthetic that reminds me of Scandinavian design. She designs beautiful <a href="https://www.brigitteheitland.de/fabrics2" target="_blank">fabric</a> for Moda and has many very cool <a href="https://www.brigitteheitland.de/shop" target="_blank">patterns</a> available.<br />
<br />
A couple of years ago I purchased her book, <a href="https://www.brigitteheitland.de/book" target="_blank">Zen Chic Inspired</a>. It's all about creating quilts that are inspired by interiors, both in color and design. It's a really interesting concept and fun to think about when you're making a quilt to be used in a particular room in your house.<br />
<br />
"Iceland Ice" is one of the patterns in the book and reminds me very much of the Asterisk block that was popular several years ago.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqI4sjcKa5pWi_p2GeJ74aVrfcjK3p1gT_w8zR6SYhNbgKfUUPJocyCck3vcybYcrfYMdgKH2XL8RXsISvUfOZNoY8p-ctnaU8skfQwTvSJ8JaKmYHGRQGyRxxNvlJuwvDDBhIo7E2aaI/s1600/DSC_4999.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="789" data-original-width="1000" height="504" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqI4sjcKa5pWi_p2GeJ74aVrfcjK3p1gT_w8zR6SYhNbgKfUUPJocyCck3vcybYcrfYMdgKH2XL8RXsISvUfOZNoY8p-ctnaU8skfQwTvSJ8JaKmYHGRQGyRxxNvlJuwvDDBhIo7E2aaI/s640/DSC_4999.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This "Iceland Ice" version caught my eye because it repeats the same fabrics in both the background and the Asterisk. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqUDG7z9PEHrgR303WehRXMyFHNcuhubDMkrck9ZjpUOStx31XF1AhSqHpL1sX8jiZ7vvImLBlwfyPzZYgidWps8-tYIc5xGJ3sdhXdpsejuO9GgqUYBlZvxb9PlrtiRXtfrGyZ57zpKk/s1600/DSC_5003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="731" data-original-width="1000" height="466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqUDG7z9PEHrgR303WehRXMyFHNcuhubDMkrck9ZjpUOStx31XF1AhSqHpL1sX8jiZ7vvImLBlwfyPzZYgidWps8-tYIc5xGJ3sdhXdpsejuO9GgqUYBlZvxb9PlrtiRXtfrGyZ57zpKk/s640/DSC_5003.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My version uses shades of bright blue, blush pink, rusty gold, grays and white which were all inspired by the floral print from the Aviary Collection by Ruby Star Society (which is also on the back).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1dgV4SLv4oNt_Iffllo-egWL_ZmM67MkuJ-0KUCP2A_EB3V4QAO0LG7jVQmEjgouY2PxnatNJTGMLINQDKQoWTOmOi9nFrtTTU5HDA6vkiL6ecaqqgYTMTvt-J798CM304Z7Amvxn2n0/s1600/DSC_5026.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="662" data-original-width="1000" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1dgV4SLv4oNt_Iffllo-egWL_ZmM67MkuJ-0KUCP2A_EB3V4QAO0LG7jVQmEjgouY2PxnatNJTGMLINQDKQoWTOmOi9nFrtTTU5HDA6vkiL6ecaqqgYTMTvt-J798CM304Z7Amvxn2n0/s640/DSC_5026.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once the top was finished, there is always the dilemma of how to quilt. I posed the problem on Instagram along with a photo of the top and 2 commenters suggested a spiral. A spiral was really the perfect solution, but I really had to think about turning this 60" x 72" quilt round and round and round....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuaVaJ_xW-fDolO6xrCTKDkEzx2R2-t97pSpSH03WR3WDiRm7G_oR2dbrCuD22PmsYSXPHJG-mqxchJSBx0hdj9bAA48SixGsWryyB3S_nKQP-wKnQ-L2pm4SP1MzrcHAaB40-Mx-Yurw/s1600/DSC_5019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="662" data-original-width="1000" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuaVaJ_xW-fDolO6xrCTKDkEzx2R2-t97pSpSH03WR3WDiRm7G_oR2dbrCuD22PmsYSXPHJG-mqxchJSBx0hdj9bAA48SixGsWryyB3S_nKQP-wKnQ-L2pm4SP1MzrcHAaB40-Mx-Yurw/s640/DSC_5019.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My solution was to off-center the spiral. I started it 2 blocks from the top and 2 blocks from the left. This allowed me to reach the edges sooner. I spiraled around, spacing the lines a bit less that 1". By the time about 1/3 of the quilt was quilted, I had already reached 2 edges and quilted the echoing curved lines from edge to edge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So happy with how it turned out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

It's <a href="https://quiltyloveshop.com/collections/featured-products/products/night-stars-pdf-quilt-pattern-automatic-download" target="_blank">Night Star</a>s designed by Emily Dennis from <a href="https://www.quiltylove.com/" target="_blank">Quilty Love</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpUv2icrpDGO50FIWrwQiraXGF8enDo6CnxPhcZvTiX-amZsW30oMyMzf60tzRrOTsccfxrN48wn6S229a828nMAdcpd6uV1D1j9Z9_FK3bTbsMnDLnL-_k_MUnAGqlOhWkf43JWOsA6s/s1600/DSC_4976.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="1000" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpUv2icrpDGO50FIWrwQiraXGF8enDo6CnxPhcZvTiX-amZsW30oMyMzf60tzRrOTsccfxrN48wn6S229a828nMAdcpd6uV1D1j9Z9_FK3bTbsMnDLnL-_k_MUnAGqlOhWkf43JWOsA6s/s640/DSC_4976.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The color inspiration was this strawberry fabric from <a href="http://www.rubystarsociety.com/" target="_blank">Ruby Star Society</a>. I had some Kona Teal and Kona Lingerie that worked beautifully with the colors in the print. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO6-Ym_hICU7Ri-K4gkZPJiN3DKIScbzx2LY8wLwEaNEqmgQc7cqOB-nuoL_hcyL59DNfUiZhwE_Ex6EstATBrIQ9pZFuwM1JVamHINhPa5swqWG9oVz9OOmH-NExbHf27YOnCOOG0x0I/s1600/DSC_4981.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="781" data-original-width="1000" height="498" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO6-Ym_hICU7Ri-K4gkZPJiN3DKIScbzx2LY8wLwEaNEqmgQc7cqOB-nuoL_hcyL59DNfUiZhwE_Ex6EstATBrIQ9pZFuwM1JVamHINhPa5swqWG9oVz9OOmH-NExbHf27YOnCOOG0x0I/s640/DSC_4981.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I pulled teal and pink prints from my stash to make the star blocks. You'll notice that one block uses Kona Raisin instead of the light pink Lingerie. That's because I was short on yardage and decided to work with what I had on hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I backed the quilt in the cute strawberry print and quilted it using straight lines.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut the leftover teal for the binding, but again ran short on yardage, so I inserted bits of the RSS strawberry print in the binding.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's a nice big quilt and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out!</div>

With the weather and the upheaval in the world right now, I hadn't taken the time to photograph it until today. And I'm kind of glad I waited as our world is turning green and Spring has sprung :) It brought me some joy this Easter weekend - hope it brings the same to you.<br />
<br />
The quilt is <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/765571337/pdf-fresh-as-a-daisy-quilt-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_9&crt=1" target="_blank">"Fresh As A Daisy"</a>, a pattern by Lindsey from <a href="http://penandpaperpatterns.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Pen and Paper Patterns</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used some of the brightest fabrics in my stash and quilted it with organic lines. The adjacent quilting lines criss-cross creating a ribbon effect.</div>

<br />
Yesterday I took advantage of a nicer day to snap a few photos of my <a href="http://dsquilts.com/fabric_and_patterns.asp?PageID=83" target="_blank">Free Wheeling Single Girl Quilt,</a> a design from Denyse Schmidt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This pattern's been around for years and I've had it on my to-do list for years also. A Quilt Along on Instagram last Fall got me motivated.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The background is chambray, a light weight cotton with a denim look. I love how soft and drapey it made the quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdULPeAIlfYGTGAQhpmBjZZ6FyYMtecL5t9k4AyEg4Vv3w4WEV1YvEX3yipTTiOqOeXlxjJfNJ_l-9zRnozRsWDKIE_ayOIw7fVMTVSSGPp0dU-0Ufenkh_51xBqL5gQZWeaX3aR2uCm4/s1600/DSC_4876.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="651" data-original-width="1000" height="416" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdULPeAIlfYGTGAQhpmBjZZ6FyYMtecL5t9k4AyEg4Vv3w4WEV1YvEX3yipTTiOqOeXlxjJfNJ_l-9zRnozRsWDKIE_ayOIw7fVMTVSSGPp0dU-0Ufenkh_51xBqL5gQZWeaX3aR2uCm4/s640/DSC_4876.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to hand quilt it this Winter and enjoyed every minute of the slow stitching.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNbiMEovcc6jYaHdzuWU5vI6gQGI_nl_QO9Ku6zDF7w0PlvtznNEDLPvwm4txpEkpJgYiqtXP5ft0T6rbiAQ6xgVE8XwEcO1_ObqZL7bwAv0ZSu1NPpMOMGvs8pNAWGaxX2GNKoo6w_0M/s1600/DSC_4879.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="662" data-original-width="1000" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNbiMEovcc6jYaHdzuWU5vI6gQGI_nl_QO9Ku6zDF7w0PlvtznNEDLPvwm4txpEkpJgYiqtXP5ft0T6rbiAQ6xgVE8XwEcO1_ObqZL7bwAv0ZSu1NPpMOMGvs8pNAWGaxX2GNKoo6w_0M/s640/DSC_4879.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the quilting design provided by Denyse to the QAL participants. I transferred the design to the quilt by perforating the paper pattern on my sewing machine (stitch on the lines without thread) and using a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Hancy-4-Ounce-Quilt-Pounce-Powder/dp/B000J3RSW6" target="_blank">Pounce pad </a>to transfer the chalk lines. I used Aurifil 28 weight thread in a light gray. It has the look of traditional quilting rather than big-stitch quilting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP2qM-1DsX9ccF786DZHWS1RCqUfJk-pgf3-_5RBJsPfBTOe6VrJ5KtvUSQ5G-dwYWXoVvsPC_oo1H0TGY_XGcvhKGyGxB-AC3rXZBLSHyNmHXABnjJTT0V_0i_lY2-eWPxRYp-O2ClpI/s1600/DSC_4881.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="662" data-original-width="1000" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP2qM-1DsX9ccF786DZHWS1RCqUfJk-pgf3-_5RBJsPfBTOe6VrJ5KtvUSQ5G-dwYWXoVvsPC_oo1H0TGY_XGcvhKGyGxB-AC3rXZBLSHyNmHXABnjJTT0V_0i_lY2-eWPxRYp-O2ClpI/s640/DSC_4881.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The backing is one of my favorite prints by Rifle Paper Company. I thought it complimented the quilt so well that I used the excess backing to bind the quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A combination of the light-weight chambray, the hand quilting and <a href="http://www.quiltersdreambatting.com/products/fusion-8020/" target="_blank">Quilter's Dream 80/20 batting </a>made this one so soft and cuddly. I think it will be used again and again!</div>

You may remember, I made a small quilt and I'm happy to report that it's finished!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the Serpentine stitch on my Bernina to quilt squiggly lines diagonally across the quilt. It's machine bound using the fun aqua plaid that I used in a couple of the blocks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Those points are tricky to match up when assembling the blocks, so be sure to pin at that point and you should be good. I also pressed those seams open to distribute some of the bulk. Once it's quilted, it flattens right out!</div>

<br />
Cheryl and I differ in our approaches to quilt making in that she loves the efficiency of assembly line piecing and I like to make one block at a time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7UYyUVTQzGB7JKZqDVP5bTRd8ZlTS47nyCPj05TEKZKLsJA07LJIoUSlT2hjDVsCpS83KE52QL6GIkaKlBMvh14BtE7apGA9f87-G6DpSc0xYnyDmRUXgnibWV-BcINun_c5Of5uAurw/s1600/DSC_4831.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1000" height="490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7UYyUVTQzGB7JKZqDVP5bTRd8ZlTS47nyCPj05TEKZKLsJA07LJIoUSlT2hjDVsCpS83KE52QL6GIkaKlBMvh14BtE7apGA9f87-G6DpSc0xYnyDmRUXgnibWV-BcINun_c5Of5uAurw/s640/DSC_4831.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I need the instant gratification of seeing a block and <strike>sometimes</strike> often change my mind as I go. Although I do admit to assembly line piecing as I get to the end as I'm ready to finish and get on to the next project! :)<br />
<br />
How about you?Cindyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17313580400281160627noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219691809988138892.post-62833054548480631262020-02-18T05:00:00.000-05:002020-02-18T05:00:01.037-05:00Camden Road QAL ~ Adding a Border<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A great way to make a quilt a bit larger is to add borders. The current trend in modern quilting is to omit any borders, so today I have an idea that may help.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In order to add some width and height to a quilt, without using traditional borders, how about taking a portion of a design element into the border. It's exactly what I'm doing with my Camden Road and it's a nice technique to add some size to many quilts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's also a great way to make a quilt the size that you want. In this quilt I made the side borders 5" and the top and bottom borders 2 1/2". It got me to a 40" x 50" quilt that is still visually pleasing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvp9IgkJjE78yFObCd6csCmmibSKiIp36l2p0gsurg3xb4WYIaZTHcvC72CX_KzykXSZ0shp-5OaoT9M0DPBc1vQE43i2kzTekVY1jKe4gblR2yBYMhUk3WoKL2SN8zUFBdIM-2hNSSHw/s1600/CR_%2521.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="747" data-original-width="600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvp9IgkJjE78yFObCd6csCmmibSKiIp36l2p0gsurg3xb4WYIaZTHcvC72CX_KzykXSZ0shp-5OaoT9M0DPBc1vQE43i2kzTekVY1jKe4gblR2yBYMhUk3WoKL2SN8zUFBdIM-2hNSSHw/s640/CR_%2521.jpg" width="514" /></a></div>
<br />
Start by looking for a design element from the block that could be carried into the border. I decided to continue both the inner and outer background colors. You could even add additional Flying Geese into the border!<br />
<br />
It helps to sketch out the design on paper or use quilt design software like EQ. See mine below...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2xEGQXaPCEF_H_9ayL0zCgfHK2mlF6jkyauaN3PZzliF1rhP-1H5ar9xf2yFzwWOzOERsVFyHES9A2RBJlTYh9gd1JXPoMXsAkAtK-OFoVGcWlBDK4klV1X2-ujuHKhy7gna5z5onP48/s1600/Screen+Shot+2020-02-15+at+5.05.36+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1284" data-original-width="1096" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2xEGQXaPCEF_H_9ayL0zCgfHK2mlF6jkyauaN3PZzliF1rhP-1H5ar9xf2yFzwWOzOERsVFyHES9A2RBJlTYh9gd1JXPoMXsAkAtK-OFoVGcWlBDK4klV1X2-ujuHKhy7gna5z5onP48/s640/Screen+Shot+2020-02-15+at+5.05.36+PM.png" width="546" /></a></div>
For this quilt, I added the side borders first. Refer to the arrows in the diagram and measure the finished size of "B" for the top and bottom of each border piece, "C" for the inner background, and "D" for the outer background. Adding 1/2" for seam allowance, use your measurements to cut your pieces by whatever width you'd like the border.<br />
<br />
Piece and attach the side borders.<br />
<br />
For the top and bottom borders, you'll use the same measurements "C" and "D" for the inner and outer backgrounds. You'll need to measure "A" for the four end pieces. Add seam allowances, piece and attach the borders to the top and bottom.<br />
<br />
Hope you find this idea helpful and maybe it will come in handy again sometime!<br />

It's time to start cutting out your Camden Road Quilt! {if you haven't already}</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You may remember that I'm doing a six-block kid's quilt. I really only need 3 fat quarters to make my 6 blocks, but I think a scrappier version with more fabrics will be more interesting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Totally scrappy, using any and all colors, would turn out great! But I've limited my colors to navy, green and aqua. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's how to cut the quilt from smaller pieces or multiple fabrics: Refer to the cutting instructions and cut 1 large square from one fabric and 1 large square plus 4 smaller squares from a second fabric for each block.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3TjEehgmeNhbqd6mnPMAomDWibHESGfPPNr1FJ8Z7CrD_3VwfD0qBlX7eI-ufV9tjTLqy61oTWrjuzktFFilgI8SJ0_r24_cIb4QQREwhYMjUhUWKZzSEbRvDjODHA1Vwr4-EXwxecSc/s1600/IMG_3079.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3TjEehgmeNhbqd6mnPMAomDWibHESGfPPNr1FJ8Z7CrD_3VwfD0qBlX7eI-ufV9tjTLqy61oTWrjuzktFFilgI8SJ0_r24_cIb4QQREwhYMjUhUWKZzSEbRvDjODHA1Vwr4-EXwxecSc/s640/IMG_3079.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like to organize my blocks in piles to get a nice visual of what my color combinations will look like and to make sure I have the right proportions of each color that I want.</div>

So put in a new blade and get your Camden Road cut out this week!Cindyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17313580400281160627noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219691809988138892.post-29022600559569836722020-02-02T11:36:00.000-05:002020-02-02T11:36:09.418-05:00Split SunburstIf you've been around for a while, you may remember the Sunburst quilt pattern I created for McCall's Quilting Magazine many years ago. It was also published in the book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Best-Wall-Quilts-Mccalls-Quilting/dp/160468206X" target="_blank">Best Wall Quilts</a> and you can see it <a href="http://hyacinthquiltdesigns.blogspot.com/2012/10/best-wall-quilts.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
It's actually an old design that I found in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Pieced-Patterns-Barbara-Brackman/dp/0891458158/ref=sr_1_1?crid=HZLLSCJBJ1D0&keywords=barbara+brackman+encyclopedia&qid=1580661133&sprefix=barbara+Blackman%2Caps%2C154&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia</a> of Quilt Blocks, and right next to the original is a version where all of the diamonds are split. I've had in the back of my mind that I would love to try that some day - but wow - it cannot be strip pieced and there are tons of points to match and try not to chop off!<br />
<br />
A few months ago, I decided to give it a try when I spotted <a href="https://my.modafabrics.com/shop/itemDetail.do?item-id=1081353&order-quantity=1&customer-item=2864.00288&order-uom=&warehouse-id=6&item-number=2864.00288" target="_blank">Ruby Star Society's Speckled</a> fabric at my local quilt shop. I knew I had the perfect fabric for the design and also that it would be either a big win or a big fail!<br />
<br />
And it turned into a win in my book!<br />
<br />
An interesting note: my original plan was to use a white background (instead of the navy) and have the half diamonds "float" on the quilt {which is actually very pretty}. But as I was coloring the binding in EQ8, I accidentally clicked on the background and turned it navy. I texted my friend, <a href="https://meadowmistdesigns.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Cheryl</a>, to get a second opinion and we both liked the navy better.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a lot of points to match! But, I took my time and most of them turned out pretty well :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6LQapsKygE1ruYPb6yE0RbXtcTYGtf8vsBlqlf1sq_spz-g9dXOJM3sGMJ0neu2odZy-E0n_5yQ9tsHch-lIPKGbY2M-nUD7EmNsYLsfZH8odwDWR0YkcwD8HD6-LDe-ReEKpkw8qwk4/s1600/Camden+Road+Quilt+Along+copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6LQapsKygE1ruYPb6yE0RbXtcTYGtf8vsBlqlf1sq_spz-g9dXOJM3sGMJ0neu2odZy-E0n_5yQ9tsHch-lIPKGbY2M-nUD7EmNsYLsfZH8odwDWR0YkcwD8HD6-LDe-ReEKpkw8qwk4/s400/Camden+Road+Quilt+Along+copy.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Assuming you have your pattern - the next step is choosing some fabric. Today both <a href="https://meadowmistdesigns.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Cheryl</a> and I are sharing the fabric we're using for our own Camden Road quilts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm making a 6-block quilt and adding borders to create a kid's quilt for charity. I pulled navy, green and aqua from my stash for the blocks and will be using white and aqua for the backgrounds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You may notice that I have way more fabrics than I need for just 6 blocks, but I thought it would be fun to make it scrappier and I may eliminate one or two as I go. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next week I'll be sharing how to cut a scrappy version and prepare your blocks for piecing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl5cdXNtSx9ZN81jIpG7g5fncCvay0uM6fcy6Zh2RDIm2h990xMvPwbjjMKJpEVMeg7KIpd1HDKlfoSA6qYJgO-aYCEKtKckjz9W75Sew2AFWZt8_5MspoUGrOmpO_K_WJRQINiOGcRf8/s1600/IMG_3066.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1243" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl5cdXNtSx9ZN81jIpG7g5fncCvay0uM6fcy6Zh2RDIm2h990xMvPwbjjMKJpEVMeg7KIpd1HDKlfoSA6qYJgO-aYCEKtKckjz9W75Sew2AFWZt8_5MspoUGrOmpO_K_WJRQINiOGcRf8/s640/IMG_3066.jpg" width="496" /></a></div>
<br />
Have you chosen your fabrics yet? I've seen a few great combos pop up on Instagram! Be sure to share your fabrics there #CamdenRoadQAL, in the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583320305263906/?ref=bookmarks" target="_blank">Facebook Group </a>or leave a comment to tell us what colors you're using.<br />
<br />
One of the great things about this pattern is that there are so many possibilities!!Cindyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17313580400281160627noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219691809988138892.post-55575907763639561502020-01-21T04:00:00.000-05:002020-01-21T04:00:00.831-05:00Camden Road QAL Prizes!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In one week we'll be kicking off of the Camden Road Quilt Along! It's a fun quilt to make and I hope you'll be joining <a href="https://meadowmistdesigns.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Cheryl</a> and I! You can find out all about the quilt along <a href="http://hyacinthquiltdesigns.blogspot.com/2020/01/camden-road-quilt-along.html" target="_blank">here</a> and you may want to join the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583320305263906/?ref=bookmarks" target="_blank">Facebook group</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
Now is the time to get the pattern and you can still get it for 25% off through January 28th using the code CAMDENROAD. The code will only work on the Camden Road pattern and only in the shop (not on Etsy).<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">It's also a good time to be thinking about what fabric to use to make your quilt as we'll start cutting next week. I've decided to make a charity quilt for the Greenville MQG's Quilts for Kids program. I'll be making 6 blocks and adding borders that compliment the design. Stay tuned for more info on that!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I've chosen fabrics from my stash and intend to use a variety fabrics and make it a bit more scrappy than the original. Here is what I've pulled in navy, green, aqua and white. <b>Here's a tip:</b> You want to be sure that your colors and fabrics contrast well with both of your background fabrics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">And here is the mock-up of what I'm going for...</span><br />

As I colored the patches this design started to emerge and of course I had to change it from green to blue. I loved how the diamond shapes were created simply by the play of light and dark. At that point, I abandoned the Christmas Tree quilt and made this one :)</div>

I quilted it with straight lines that emerged from the upper right third of the quilt. I started with 1" spaced lines and went back and quilted again between each one, creating lines that are spaced 1/2" apart. I find I get much better results doing it that way.</div>

</div>
<br />
How about Quilt Along to start the new year? Cheryl from <a href="https://meadowmistdesigns.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Meadow Mist Designs </a> has a new pattern and I was immediately excited to make the Camden Road. It was my last quilt of 2019 and you can read all about it <a href="http://hyacinthquiltdesigns.blogspot.com/2019/12/camden-road.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
We decided to join forces and host a Quilt Along to start the year! It's such a fun block based quilt and perfect for a bundle of fat quarters or stash fabrics that you have on hand.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCmS3gIQpTTIZaaTNUSLVbSRSWsA06VssELvlgSNCDwsK7WmFe4Rrw9s-bFEP9LeaUqgAeZyRfK3omS_cZPAIiZCILAqOInTqhl_q6P10F2mQHiFt4zH-QSxgkKJYgjuLDd70SanUnj0o/s1600/Camden+Road+Quilt+Along.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCmS3gIQpTTIZaaTNUSLVbSRSWsA06VssELvlgSNCDwsK7WmFe4Rrw9s-bFEP9LeaUqgAeZyRfK3omS_cZPAIiZCILAqOInTqhl_q6P10F2mQHiFt4zH-QSxgkKJYgjuLDd70SanUnj0o/s400/Camden+Road+Quilt+Along.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The Camden Road Quilt Along will run from <b>January 28th - March 24th, 2020</b>. The pattern contains instructions for baby, lap, and twin sizes and you can make any size you would like during the QAL.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b>Post on social media with #CamdenRoadQAL to share your progress with the other quilters.</b></i></div>
<br />
How many blocks you should aim to complete each week depends on the quilt size you are making. We will have 5 weeks of block making, followed by 3 weeks to catch up on blocks and sew the quilt top together.<br />
<br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><i>You do not have to follow the number of blocks per week, if you prefer you could make all of the flying geese one week, the corner units another week, etc. The only link-up for prizes will be at the end of the quilt along with the quilt top and/or finished quilt </i></span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started with this great print from one of my favorite fabric designers, <a href="http://leahduncan.com/#/id/i12740775" target="_blank">Leah Duncan</a>. It was easy to pull colors from the print and I found blacks, greens, yellows and coral-y oranges in my stash to compliment the print. I used Kona Ash and Snow for the backgrounds.</div>

For the quilting, I sewed straight lines vertically and horizontally through the center of the blocks. I framed the gray "pluses" with some ruler quilting and free motion quilted within the frames.</div>

And some fun news! Cheryl and I will be hosting a Quilt Along for Camden Road starting in January. It would be a fun quilt to start off your year of sewing and I can envision it in so many color combinations. Stay tuned for more details and see Cheryl's version <a href="https://meadowmistdesigns.blogspot.com/2019/11/camden-road-pattern-release-new-pattern.html" target="_blank">here</a>!Cindyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17313580400281160627noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219691809988138892.post-38771789453993044452019-12-03T11:39:00.000-05:002019-12-03T11:39:45.126-05:00Garden Fence Variation<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Garden Fence is a block I originally shared <a href="http://hyacinthquiltdesigns.blogspot.com/2011/01/garden-fence.html" target="_blank">here</a> on the blog and then provided the full pattern in my book, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Simply-Modern-Christmas-Quilting-Patterns/dp/1604682183/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Simply+Modern+Christmas&qid=1575390772&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Simply Modern Christmas</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I thought it might be fun to play around in EQ with the quilt design and this is what I came up with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1G3oJKkeMJol9iup7J7mZb2V03e0DNAywVypergIp0uIPYhKKvTj2mYJtVsSZxXtsPQFw3ZmcwaNnyP3pVwORmH-ZHqE33KXVLgtKA36JCvCFYJFOuvR4l71x2cbQ9p4QbCg4JcKiDHE/s1600/DSC_4677.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="427" data-original-width="640" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1G3oJKkeMJol9iup7J7mZb2V03e0DNAywVypergIp0uIPYhKKvTj2mYJtVsSZxXtsPQFw3ZmcwaNnyP3pVwORmH-ZHqE33KXVLgtKA36JCvCFYJFOuvR4l71x2cbQ9p4QbCg4JcKiDHE/s640/DSC_4677.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the book version...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh87r_JTOuBYpuh4nXti69YxRYe081EzNJTX-hnm5_bMqs1OUcU_7MvKlFMwFAUQzGlqWTAXSmup3SqV7LDsvh9kr3MgCfodL-pqnpulhOSm9q4-tWRUqdvyc_alIqbd1e75tesA5TXJpA/s1600/b1174_14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="309" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh87r_JTOuBYpuh4nXti69YxRYe081EzNJTX-hnm5_bMqs1OUcU_7MvKlFMwFAUQzGlqWTAXSmup3SqV7LDsvh9kr3MgCfodL-pqnpulhOSm9q4-tWRUqdvyc_alIqbd1e75tesA5TXJpA/s640/b1174_14.jpg" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And my original...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the method, Subtracting for Minimalism that I learned in a workshop from Cheryl at <a href="https://meadowmistdesigns.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Meadow Mist Designs.</a> By using the paintbrush tool in EQ I "erased" portions of the quilt.</div>

<a href="https://www.annamariahorner.com/quilt-patterns-templates/plot-twist-quilt" target="_blank">Plot Twist</a>, a pattern by Anna Maria Horner is my first appliqué quilt in quite a while! I thoroughly enjoyed getting back to the slow process of hand stitching - this quilt has been in the works since January. All the shapes were appliquéd by turning under the edges with starch and freezer paper, then stitched with matching 80 weight Aurifil thread.</div>

I modified the pattern a bit, to create the size I wanted to work with. Several sizes are included in the pattern and I created my version combining elements from several options.<br />

I raised $965 for <a href="https://fgi4kids.org/" target="_blank">Fostering Great Ideas</a>. Quilts doing good again!<br />
<br />
I recently finished quilting and binding the Sampler Block of the Month Quilt that was featured in this year's <a href="https://quiltersplanner.com/" target="_blank">Quilter's Planner</a>. This is a block-of-the-month that is included in the quilt pattern magazine that comes with each planner. The quilt was designed by my friend, Cheryl Brickey from <a href="https://meadowmistdesigns.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Meadow Mist Designs</a>. She created a very interesting setting for the sampler blocks, but of course, I had to do something different.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjivF-qPepvlX8afXjyHV0f6gDIHPlvmdUX9Olq8VY0UiNILpg3vk76p8WdhQn-G2SEBCHuVIHNh4buowteiVRgyWWH_dtapCC1a4t5FR5OEUtB6Jn6-fTsHZRuSEwlm1vWcNkxD45nvmQ/s1600/DSC_4267.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="647" data-original-width="1000" height="414" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjivF-qPepvlX8afXjyHV0f6gDIHPlvmdUX9Olq8VY0UiNILpg3vk76p8WdhQn-G2SEBCHuVIHNh4buowteiVRgyWWH_dtapCC1a4t5FR5OEUtB6Jn6-fTsHZRuSEwlm1vWcNkxD45nvmQ/s640/DSC_4267.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used 5 of the blocks from the Sampler Quilt and set them diagonally, adding some negative space to square it up.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The center block section is quilted with a grid, with diagonal lines in the striped and solid white areas. In the white, I spaced my quilting lines to mimic the spacing of the quilting in the striped sections.</div>

I've been waiting for the perfect quilt to photograph in front of this beautiful mural in my home city of Greenville. It was done by local artist <a href="https://www.josephbradleystudio.com/" target="_blank">Joseph Bradley</a>. My friend noticed the cute bird peeking around the quilt on the right. I wish I was clever enough to have planned that, but I got lucky!</div>

It's quite large and makes such a statement! I think I need to make another quilt to photograph here :)<br />

<br />
Most of you know I've made a lot of quilts and have a lot of quilts! Over the years, I've donated quilts to different causes when I could. This time I'd like to do a little something different.<br />
<br />
I'm auctioning off 4 of my large quilts. 100% of the proceeds from the sale will go to a non government funded non-profit that provides support and assistance to children in foster care in South Carolina called <a href="https://fgi4kids.org/" target="_blank">Fostering Great Ideas</a>. This wonderful organization hosts programs such as <a href="https://fgi4kids.org/ideas/" target="_blank">Moms Matter</a>, a free peer support group that helps Moms on their journey to get their children back. In addition, they offer tutoring, mentoring, sibling visitation, college support and so much more.<br />
<br />
I would like to support their <a href="https://fgi4kids.org/ideas/" target="_blank">Carry On</a> program which provides luggage to children who are often moving from home to home. When a child moves, trash bags are used to carry their belongings. Providing luggage allows children to move on with dignity. I'll use much of the proceeds to purchase <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003K4MVFA/?coliid=I3AUAZ6UDX0M6U&colid=2RZ0PD7U6E7SD&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it" target="_blank">these rolling suitcases</a> from Amazon in some fun colors. Any remaining monies will be used for a cash donation.<br />
<br />
The auction will take place on my Instagram account <a href="https://www.instagram.com/clammon/" target="_blank">@clammon</a>. Two quilts will be posted on Monday and two on Tuesday around noon Eastern. Bidding will start at $100 and payment will be by PayPal (US only).<br />
<br />
And now on to the quilts up for auction!<br />
<br />
"Marmalde" is a quilt made from a pattern by Camille of <a href="https://thimbleblossoms.com/" target="_blank">Thimbleblossoms</a>. It's 67" x 76" and made in "Bliss" fabrics from Bonnie and Camille.<br />

All of the quilts are clean, never been used and from a smoke-free, pet-free home.<br />
<br />
And finally - I have a big favor to ask - since most of you are quilters (and maybe don't need another quilt), can you let anyone who might be interested know about the sale? All they'd need to do is check out the Instagram posts on Monday and Tuesday.<br />
<br />
Thank you so much! Let's help some kids get a good start in life 💗Cindyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17313580400281160627noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219691809988138892.post-45276858135961053612019-07-25T19:53:00.000-04:002019-07-25T19:53:52.103-04:00100 Day ProjectHave you heard of <a href="https://www.the100dayproject.org/" target="_blank">the 100 Day Project</a>? Click over to the website to learn more. Basically it's an exercise to boost your creativity. Officially it starts in April, but I decided in March to start my own version.<br />
<br />
My plan was to take one "quilty" photo every day, trying different staging set ups to create photos of whatever I was working on that day.<br />
<br />
It's good to do a bit of pre-planning and set your project up so that it's simple, fun and fairly easy to achieve. I first decided that I would aim for photos that fit my "style" - light, bright, clean and simple. I decided to do all square photos since much of my work is posted to Instagram. Each day I took 3-4 photos of the same thing, changing angles, closeness, and maybe moving items around a bit.<br />
<br />
Every Friday night, I uploaded my photos to my computer, edited and chose my favorite from each day. I tried to learn what I liked about each one and what I didn't like. I numbered each photo using the iPad app, <a href="https://acolorstory.com/a-design-kit/" target="_blank">A Design Kit</a>. Then using the online photo printing site, <a href="https://www.artifactuprising.com/" target="_blank">Artifact Uprising,</a> I added my 7 photos from the week to a soft cover book.<br />
<br />
I missed a few days along the way, but finished up the project by taking my 100th photo on July 7th and ordered my photo book as a record of the project.<br />

<br />
Did I learn anything? You bet I did!<br />
<br />
Number one, I learned to get my lighting correct. Lighting is everything in photography. In May, I was lucky enough to take a quilt photography class from <a href="https://nightquilter.com/" target="_blank">Kitty Wilkin</a> through the <a href="http://www.greenvillemodernquiltguild.com/" target="_blank">Greenville Modern Quilt Guild</a>. As a result of the class, on Kitty's recommendation, I purchased<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KWLV0MI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s04?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank"> these simple and inexpensive studio lights</a>. They have made a world of difference and allowed more freedom as to where and when I can take a photo.<br />
<br />
I love flat lay photography and learned to improve my composition in flat lay, primarily through trial and error. Practice makes perfect (or almost perfect).<br />
<br />
Do you take pictures of your quilts and their progress? What I love about it, is that it makes me stop and appreciate what I'm doing, what I've done and where to go next. As someone who has a tendency to go, go, go, it's good for me. The proverbial "stop and smell the roses" or in my case, stop and appreciate the work.<br />
<br />
I loved doing a 100 Day Project so much! Have you ever done one? There's definitely another in my future :)Cindyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17313580400281160627noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219691809988138892.post-43549179549555292752019-07-18T20:07:00.000-04:002019-07-18T20:07:19.916-04:00Modern Fans QuiltI have a new finished quilt to share today!<br />
<br />
This one has been in the works for a while - not difficult - but a little time consuming with all the curved piecing. The pattern is <a href="https://suzyquilts.com/shop/modern-fans-quilts-pattern-download/" target="_blank">Modern Fans</a> from <a href="https://suzyquilts.com/" target="_blank">Suzy Quilts</a>.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are several variations of the design in the pattern. They're all very similar and this one is the "Calm Lagoon" version which uses blocks 1 and 3.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Suzy hosted a <a href="https://suzyquilts.com/category/blog/sew-along/" target="_blank">Sew Along</a> on her website and has many helpful posts for the curved piecing and the trimming.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had a hard time coming up with a quilting design for this one, typical for me. Circles would have been a great choice, but it seemed too obvious. I went with a simple stipple in the background, back and forth lines on the circles and echoes in the back curved diamond shapes.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The batting is Hobbs Silk. I won it in an online giveaway and it was my first time trying it. It's definitely nice and light and shows off the quilting well as it has a bit more puffiness than my usual cotton. The back is a lawn from Bonnie and Camille's recent line "Little Snippets".</div>

She recently hosted a Quilt-Along for the pattern on Instagram and I decided to join in. I thought the blocks were unique and adorable finishing at 4" square.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiUdprn86I7swvFz5NGA3gh-XkPRoxJ5mVnRmqrzZkIXSuNYLTCnoHbqdeRaWc8CRM0AqMNVChb45pN9jK0WfqCcGtTZrJuZed9mv09ll-MWjhag0R1DAw54TkP3u7rMcD7UW3zOK2ZSw/s1600/DSC_3883.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="948" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiUdprn86I7swvFz5NGA3gh-XkPRoxJ5mVnRmqrzZkIXSuNYLTCnoHbqdeRaWc8CRM0AqMNVChb45pN9jK0WfqCcGtTZrJuZed9mv09ll-MWjhag0R1DAw54TkP3u7rMcD7UW3zOK2ZSw/s640/DSC_3883.jpg" width="606" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used Alison Glass' <a href="https://alisonglass.com/shop-woo/kaleidoscope-2018-yardage/" target="_blank">Kaleidoscope fabric</a> in Sapphire for the background and set the blocks together in the checkerboard design featured in the pattern. Since I used the Sapphire for the background of the blocks, they appear to float on the quilt, losing the checkerboard effect. All of the blocks finish at 4", and I placed them on the quilt from smallest to largest motif.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the quilting, I used angled straight lines that were spaced more closely at the top of the quilt and further apart toward the bottom the quilt. I started at 3/8", increasing by 1/8" increments until I got to 1" spacing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I decide to create a bit of an "X" design near the top for more interest in the quilting. The thread color is a medium gray. (Note: this photo was taken indoors and the above photos better represent the color of the quilt).<br />

I've been working on it for several months and gifted it this past weekend.<br />
<br />
I started with a big box of clothes that included knits, denim, cotton, and polyesters - many items featuring embellishments that were too cute not to include (like the little owl). I carefully cut each clothing piece into several 3 1/2" squares, fussy cutting here and there. I salvaged the clothing pieces where I could, using a sleeve for example and turning the item into a short sleeve dress/shirt. Most of the pieces were stained and/or worn and unwearable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFQwWA3dob1ixbQHEg4YRhFQZyTq0ilnRFv4vTo2lgV34LR1VuF4TWfrgk3URe0HdpRP55jLnyU6qYWZZqposMxJjE51hHKbRK0TVVw1B8BHbtCnvgYK18bO0iDmASBgViEMrIEhhtWfc/s1600/DSC_3261.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFQwWA3dob1ixbQHEg4YRhFQZyTq0ilnRFv4vTo2lgV34LR1VuF4TWfrgk3URe0HdpRP55jLnyU6qYWZZqposMxJjE51hHKbRK0TVVw1B8BHbtCnvgYK18bO0iDmASBgViEMrIEhhtWfc/s640/DSC_3261.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All of the knit fabrics were interfaced with a super lightweight fusible interfacing. Next, I turned the 3 1/2" squares into 9 1/2" Nine-Patch blocks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX0r-x2fbhXxeaq89BqTF-7Mfpqdusd86JgpRjBZ1VAv9Y78pzR6-yPMyAnSYjpwx1ilKCroyt0hZlEFMAo7QzUEo6fkBPu2zk3l6xsV7D-sgHzhbRXfqm0UDupnmAjiao3WyuLVQ-IjU/s1600/DSC_3263.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX0r-x2fbhXxeaq89BqTF-7Mfpqdusd86JgpRjBZ1VAv9Y78pzR6-yPMyAnSYjpwx1ilKCroyt0hZlEFMAo7QzUEo6fkBPu2zk3l6xsV7D-sgHzhbRXfqm0UDupnmAjiao3WyuLVQ-IjU/s640/DSC_3263.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I set the blocks by alternating them with a 9 1/2" white square to create a simple Irish Chain Quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the graphic tees on the back and pieced them together with a lightweight denim chambray. The purple cat in the lower left corner was a hat, that I appliquéd onto a gray background square.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't get a great picture of the quilting, but I used the serpentine stitch on my Bernina and quilted vertical lines 1" apart. I was a bit worried about the thickness in some areas and decided to use a poly thread and a number 90 needle. It quilted up without a problem!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
