Casey asked me to write a forward for the book because of my love for appliqué and my earlier start with traditional appliqué. As I mentioned in my writing - I am beyond excited to see these two words together - Modern Appliqué. Just as modern quilters have taken traditional piecing to new levels, modern appliquérs are doing the same!
What I love most about the book is the number of techniques that are featured. In addition to duplicating all of the wonderful projects, you can learn from and use the techniques provided to run with your own designs. It's one of the things that I love about appliqué. There are so many different methods of achieving the same result (or similar results), you can find what works best for you!
After reading through the book, I had to try one of the featured appliqué methods. I tried Rossie Hutchinson's reverse appliqué technique to make this little pincushion...
Rossie has a couple of projects in the book and I combined the idea of circles from this quilt with improv piecing from her second project.
A couple other favorites of mine are this quilt by Jenna Brand inspired by the cutwork of Henri Matisse...
And this one by Latifah Saafir...

I haven't done much appliqué. I made some bias tape & used it to spell a name and just machine sewed it down to a throw-but haven't done much more than that. I am slowly trying some hand sewing projects, so I think appliqué will eventually get done as well. Finding time for projects is hard, so often when I do find the time I stick with what I know so that hopefully something will actually get done!

ReplyDeleteI've tried needle turn appliqué with less than stellar results, but realize that practice would surely improve my skills. I've done raw edge appliqué and have actually been fairly happy with the outcome. It's an enjoyable technique and I should do more of it.

ReplyDeleteI love appliqué but so far have done only the machine kind and mostly using the technique where you sew thin fusible web to the fabric and then turn it inside out. I'd love to learn more ways to do this. I'll be flying across the pond to Chicago in May and will try some hand appliqué during the flight. Normally I'm too impatient but I reckon I will stick with it if there's nothing else to do.

ReplyDeleteI started learning appliqué with needle turn, and more recently bonded appliqué, first by hand with buttonhole stitch, them by machine with buttonhole and satin stitch. I would love to learn reverse appliqué, and how to incorporate it into more modern designs.
