Scout Quilt

I've have a couple of quilt tops that I really want to finish before the end of the year. The last few years, I've made it a goal to start the year with a clean slate - no tops in a pile waiting to be quilted. Since it's December, I better get going!

I made this one about 6 months ago. A fun pattern that I've had for a while and perfect for my stash busting goal this year.  The pattern is Scout by Allison at Cluck Cluck Sew.

It truly is a great pattern for pulling multiple fabrics from your stash. It's all strip pieced and I pulled pieces that had the full width, but maybe only 5-10" left. In many ways it felt good to use up the end of some fabric pieces, but a little sad too. I love seeing my favorite fabrics used in a quilt, but why does it feel sad that it's no longer sitting on my shelf?

The quilt did turn out happy and colorful. I did straight line quilting in the vertical strips and hooked feathers in the herringbone strips.

The backing a a fun Cloud 9 fabric with arrows on it. And I had just enough of this Art Gallery navy for binding - about 1/4" leftover - close!

I've also finished up quilting my Scrappy Trip quilt. I'll share that as soon as it stops raining and I can get some photos...

  1. Cindy, That is a great stashbusting quilt. I could easily make a couple of those for QOV with the appropriate colors. Thanks for the inspiration. Hope you are doing well. We are in for some really cold weather this week - especially the day of our Christmas party at BTOG. We'll miss you on Wed.
Hope you have a wonderful and Blessed Christmas.

  4. It turned out beautifully! I love the idea of starting with a clean slate and hope I'll be able to be close to doing so myself.

  6. Love this quilt! You did a great job balancing the colors. I know what you mean about hoarding those great fabrics...I think I'm afraid my finished quilt won't match the beauty of the fabrics. That can't be true for you though, because all your quilts are lovely!

  8. Hi,

How on earth do you measure out the sides of the rhombus shapes. My quilt's rhombus shapes have a left edge of 2", spans across 3". The opposite 2" edge starts 2" down from the other side. My goal is to sew the strips together (like I think you did, then slice them up into the angled strips that you see in the final quilt. Given the sewing seam edge, that would mean that my rhombus shape would be 2.5"x3.5". I cut this shape out on grid paper. So I assumed that I would cut 2.5" strips for each color. I've only cut one strip 2.5" strip so far, but when I place my paper rhombus shape on it, the 2.5" is too long (it looked like it needed to be a 2" strip instead). Do you have any advice for me?

    1. Sorry I can't help you. I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do. The pattern from Cluck Cluck Sew made this quilt very easy! I highly recommend it!
