The Gap

I came across this video today ~ it was mentioned by someone in my photography class. I thought it really applied to many of us as quilters ~ when we see everyone else's work and feel ours may not be good enough. I know I felt it when I first started quilting and again when I began trying modern quilt design. I'm happy I never quit. If you watch - let me know what you think...

And since no post is complete without a picture, here's a couple of my latest work in progress. Photos straight out of the camera {no editing}

  1. I liked the video a lot. I am in that place where my taste exceeds my work and it is hard for me to push on. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I've been at this for over 20 years so I think my work is getting there but most of my angst is over creativity. I think I should be more creative, more original than I am.

  3. What a great video! I definitely felt that way when I started sewing and I remember how thrilled to pieces I was when something FINALLY came out looking like the image I had in my head when I started making it. Now, the trick is to push through that barrier with other skills (paper piecing, free motion quilting) and not get stuck!

    Thanks for sharing!

  5. Thanks for sharing the video, it is wonderful. I am the facilitator for a group of women who are just starting to make quilts. They grow by fits and starts, and don't always see that I grow in fits and starts as well. My taste still exceeds my ability, but I'm working on that volume of work. I need to explain that to my husband next time a fabric package arrives!

  6. Is there a pattern for this beautiful work of art? I love the white strip around the stars? Many thanks - I adore this quilt.

  8. Thanks for sharing that video. I have shared it with my guild. :) We can be so hard on ourselves and I think it prevents us sometimes in seeing the successes we have and the growth we show with each creation we make. :)

  11. I love the quilt - Anna Maria, Heather and you. It's a trifecta of wonderfulness. I'm glad you didn't "stop" too.

    While I hadn't seen the video, I'm familiar with the "lecture" by Ira Glass. It's inspirational and motivational... but I always want to sit down and ask Ira questions... disagree with him a bit. (It's my nature.) How do we know we have good taste? What if we're the only one that thinks so? But I understand and am familiar with the doubts and questions about the quality of work... just because I like it doesn't mean its any good. And the reverse, do we get to critical and think something is "crap" when it isn't? And then there is the whole "comparison" thing... lol

  12. Thanks for the video link--I shared it with my artist children. A great little book along the same lines: Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative by Austin Kleon.
