My Charley Harper Quilt is finished and ready to hang!! I first blogged about the blocks here. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I had attempted a couple of ideas with this line and knew pretty quickly that those first ideas were not my vision for the fabric. One of those ideas was an improvisational pieced block using the fussy cut motifs in the fabric. One block made and I knew the busyness would detract from the beautiful artwork. That's what sparked this idea - artwork. Treat it like art; frame each piece; and hang them similar to a gallery wall.
I got lots of feedback from others who have struggled with what to do with the line. Here's how I did it! Feel free to copy away!
The quilt is made from two simple 13" finished blocks which are mirror images of each other.
For each block you need the above finished size squares and rectangles and the following strips {unfinished size} one 1 1/2" x 13 1/2", one 1 1/2" x 4 1/2", one 1 1/2" x 8 1/2".
I made my squares and rectangles by fussy cutting the motifs in the fabric and adding various size strips until it was a bit oversized. I then trimmed them to the unfinished sizes: 4 1/2" square; 8 1/2" square and 4 1/2" x 8 1/2".
When fussy cutting the rectangles, I tried to keep the proportions even. A 3 1/2" x 7 1/2" center required a border that finished at 1/2" on each side.
A 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" center required a border that finished at 1" on each side.
The blocks are pieced by sewing the squares and rectangles together with the 1 1/2" strips as pictured.
I made 9 blocks and sewed them together with 1 1/2" unfinished strips for sashing, alternating the two mirror image blocks.
I struggled with a quilting design, but ended up doing organic lines with my walking foot horizontally from edge to edge. I'm really happy with the way it turned out!
My quilt was made with 2 fat eighth bundles of Charley Harper fabric {the earlier collection and the newest collection "Nurture} that I got from Westwood Acres Fabrics.
Hope that helps you make your own! Let me know if you have any questions! I have the perfect spot to hang mine!
Great, great, great quilt! I have many of the same fabrics squirreled away (pun intended!) and your lay out is perfect! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteTotally love the Charley Harper quilt! I also struggled with how to use the fabrics, and you nailed it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am so happy that you will continue to blog. I love all your quilts so much-- we have such similar taste and I would miss your inspiring ideas so much! THANKS, THANKS, THANKS!
This is such a beauty. Love how you used these fantastic prints.
ReplyDeleteI really love this quilt! It has an easy-going, fun, classy, modern happy feel. The choices you made with these fabrics are just awesome. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful and such a great way to handle that fabric. thank you for sharing your method too,I'm going to bookmark this for me. I'm making a t-shirt quilt from my son's baby clothing and don't have perfect squares since some of the clothing was too small. I think this would be a perfect way to incorporate them!
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch for posting your instructions! I will be cutting into my Charley Harper collection soon:) This is such a great quilt.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is perfect!
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty. I love how you shared what you did. I rarely buy fabric like that but this is perfect!

ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful. I could be tempted. :D
ReplyDeletePhenomenal job with this fabric line. Love it.
ReplyDeleteThis is much like I I visioned my charley harper quilt looking like. I just need to get it done. Yours is simply gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThat's fabulous! A great piece of art. Thanks for walking us through how you did it.
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt so much! Yes, I have admired this Charley Harper line since even before it was released, but could not figure out how to use it. Well, if I can get my hands on some (this late in the game!) then I will definitely be using your tutorial and just copying outright! You won't mind, right? ;) Thanks so much for sharing this beauty with us.
ReplyDeleteReally beautiful quilt! I struggle with not buying fabric I love because I don't want to "chop" some larger prints up. This may be a really great idea for me. For instance I'm crushing on the petal and plume from AGF but wasn't sure how I'd keep the peacocks intact for the most part. This idea may work and I love it! Thank you thank you!
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt! A very effective use of this lovely fabric! And thanks for sharing your process!
ReplyDeleteNice use of fabric, but have to point out the Nuthatch is upside down - he's supposed to be facing downwards on tree as that's how they walk and was printed on fabric. It's the 2nd block down, 2nd from left.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous! A true work if art. I'm jealous. ;)
ReplyDeleteI read this post last night and couldn't help myself but to come back and look at it again this morning! I heart this quilt!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore what you have done with the Charley Harper prints. I have a bundle sitting in my stash, and hope I can make something half as wonderful as your quilt.
ReplyDeleteWow! I cannot imagine the joy that will bring, just hanging in your everyday! Great design, especially since it is repeatable! Thanks so much for sharing this !
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt, love the fabric, love the blocks. I wish I were clever enough to come up with another use of that fabric but I think your version is impossible to top. I'll be copying you as best I can. Although my placement and fabric will be a little different. It will be interesting to see al the versions. Thanks so much for sharing, you're a wonderful example of why I love the quilting community. The anonymous mistake comment is an sad example of why I sometimes don't. Thanks Cindy!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty quilt and it is perfect to show off those pretty prints! I hope to give it a go someday so thanks for sharing how you did it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing! I bought fat quarters of this Charley Harper line right when it came out, and like you, I wasn't sure how to highlight his gorgeous designs in a quilt. Your approach to frame it is brilliant.

ReplyDeleteI have the same fabric and have been saving it for a special pattern. This is it! Thank you
ReplyDeleteMy son gave me a gift certificate for Charley Harper products this Christmas. It was really hard choosing what to get ... prints, mugs, and so on. I haven't quilted in a long time but am always drawn to fabric, so I just ordered the Bird Architects fat quarter pack. I started searching for quilt ideas and found your blog on Pinterest. I like your quilt design very much!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your quilt design and have managed to find many of the fabrics but there are several particularly the ladybug and cardinal prints that I can’t find a source for. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteThe reds add so much to the design.
