Cracker

A friend invited me over for a sewing day on Monday. I didn't have a project ready to piece {well, I actually did, but I wasn't in the mood for it}. So I went to my 2015 project list and decided to start on a traditional block called Cracker.

It was block I had pinned on Pinterest and there's a great tutorial at Simple Girl, Simple Life.

I used my typical method of choosing fabrics for a quilt - so I thought I'd walk you through it today.

I started with a line called Wildwood by Elizabeth Olwen. I love her art and had purchased her earlier line Grey Abbey. So I added some of those. I also found that she is designing some fabric for JoAnn's, so off I went and found a couple of additional prints. Also scored a backing with a coupon!

Then I pulled some fabrics from my stash to add to the mix. I was looking for similar colors and a similar feel. I didn't want the pieces that I was adding to dilute the look of the original designs. So my additions tend to be very basic and geometric. Dots, stripes, tone-on-tones.

And here is how they all looked together...

I made a few blocks to be sure my measurements were correct and that I liked the size and scale...

And it turned into a productive day! Fun too!!

  1. I have been working on a HST sampler with the Wildwood fabric. I love it and I really love your blocks! I just mixed a few solids with mine because I'm not real good at mixing outside of a line yet. Lol. I'm a new quilter so I'm slowwlllyyy getting there!

  2. Beautiful! Thank you for sharing how you mixed your fabrics. I'm not very good at that and usually rely on using a complete fabric line.

  3. What a great post, thanks so much for sharing your process. I too like to add from my stash to a family but sometimes had the look and feel problem, I'll stick to more basic prints in the future, what simple but great advice. I have some Wildwood and a JoAnn's, thanks for the tip! Our JoAnn's opened this fall, it didn't take me long to figure out not to shop there without the coupons!

  4. What size is your block? I haven't made this in a long time. Looks like a good pattern for spring.

  9. I cannot wait to see the finished product. I cut an entire quilt out of this pattern, made all of the blocks, and hated it. I sewed two or three blocks together and stopped. First time ever. I think it was my choice of background fabric. I sent all of the blocks to a lady who makes charity quilts and she did a lovely job so all was not lost. Anyway, your blocks look great and your color choices were much better than mine. Hurry and finish!
