The case for open seams and weekend sewing...

I've been piecing for years and always pressed my seams to one side. The latest trend is opening the seams. This week I've been piecing lots of pinwheel type blocks and I'm 100% sold on pressing those seams open. I'm getting perfect results on most of my blocks. And almost perfect on a few. If it looks good without my glasses - it works for me!
Here's how the back looks. It really creates a nice flat center.
Looking pretty good here too!
My plan was to start cleaning up the garden this weekend. Snow, rain and cold temps have forced me to Plan B. Some Spring dresses for 2 cute little girls!
And I'm going to sew up my AMH voiles into a strip quilt - quilt-as-you-go; flannel on the back. It's looking like I may have enough for 2. I know someone (ACK) who also loves AMH fabrics - I think she'll be getting one too.
Have a happy weekend!!

  1. I do press open my seams for pinwheels but still press most other blocks' seams to the side. The side press is a stronger seam.

  2. I too am seeing the light in the value of open seams for certain blocks.

  3. I like how flat my block lays when I press the seams open.

  4. I have pressed my seams open for about 10 years now, on any piecing I possibly can. It gives a more precise finished look to my blocks. Glad you decided to do it. I didn't know it was "the latest trend" LOL

  6. I'm just discovering this myself! Open seams are the way to go! Although I think side-pressed seams might still be better when you need corners to come together.

  7. I agree about using the open seams for the pinwheel blocks. It does make for a much the block lay flat. Love the bright and cheery colors in your fabrics.

Have a super great sewing and stitching day.

  8. have always used open seams. it was a no no... but I am a rebel and because I hated the "bump" on seams pressed to one side. open seams all the way. if you FMQ you will be sooooooo grateful. welcome to the world of open, pretty seams!
