Orange Peel Quilt

I started this quilt over a year ago. I seem to have a thing for petals and leaf shapes. There's something about those petal shapes connecting up to create a pattern that gets me every time. A few years ago I did the Joseph's Coat quilt which has a similar shape and vibe.

Do you think it has a Fall feel? I'm not one that goes for the typical Fall colors {notice the purple Mums}, so this says Fall to me...

The petals were hand appliquéd - one of the reasons it took me a year. I shared my method of freezer paper and starch here. I decided not to let the petals touch. I was sure that if I tried to do that, some of them wouldn't. So there is purposely a slight gap at the corners.

If I had to do it again, I think I might have added a background border to float the design a bit. Of course I realized this after it was quilted.

The backing is a Sandi Henderson print I found on sale!

And my quilting design was quite simple. I outlined the petals and repeated petal shapes in the background. The petals are quilted with loops.

I loved making this! You may see more "petal" quilts in my future!

  1. What a beautiful quilt, and so nice that you hand appliqued the petals. There's enough orange in it to call it Fall, but there's also enough pink and purple in it to call it Spring! I love that top photo next to the pink flowers (chrysanthemums?). The back is beautiful too. I've not seen that fabric before but it's lovely.

  2. Your quilt looks absolutely marvelous, and it looks like it was fun to plan and create. If you are planning on doing another petal quilt, you might want to look at the Tuileries Quilt Pattern at Stitchery Dickory Dock. i just love it (probably in part because of the fabric she used.). I love reading your blog entries and think you are very talented and inspirational!

  6. This is so beautiful! Is there a pattern you recommend for those of us who quilt and sew but don't really have any formal knowledge? I need a guide for most things so I don't waste too much time and money :) I just love this design and palette.

  10. Beautiful quilt! I love the colors and your quilting. Went back to look at your Joseph's Coat and that is lovely too. What ever happened to the woman from Don't look Now? It seems as though she has disappeared :(. Sorry to hear about your experience with Floriani Stitch and Wash Fusible, I love that stuff. Great for making selvedge quilts because you can fuse the selvedges just the way you want, and then just sew.
